Exploring the Varieties of TOEFL Examinations
Understanding the array of TOEFL exams is crucial for individuals seeking to assess their English proficiency. Currently, there are three prominent types of TOEFL tests available, each catering to different preferences and testing environments:
TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based Test)
The TOEFL iBT exam is a widely recognized online test conducted at designated test centers. Comprising four distinct skill sections—Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing—this exam grants students a total of 3 hours for completion. Opting for TOEFL iBT is often recommended, as many universities exclusively accept scores from this test, offering a streamlined and less cumbersome process.
TOEFL iBT Home Edition
For those desiring the comfort of taking the test from home rather than a test center, the TOEFL iBT Home Edition is a viable option. While identical in content to the TOEFL iBT, the key distinction lies in its delivery, as test-takers can complete the assessment from the convenience of their homes. Live remote proctors and advanced artificial intelligence technology by ProctorU ensure secure monitoring. This option is available worldwide, excluding Mainland China and Iran.
The TOEFL Essentials Test
A recent addition to the TOEFL lineup, the Essentials Test assesses English proficiency in diverse environments beyond academic settings. Crafted by ETS assessment experts, this test undergoes evaluation by both certified humans and AI tools, ensuring validity and precision. It is a shorter test, lasting 90 minutes, covering four core English language skills—Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. With a global outlook, the test exposes test-takers to a range of accents and scenarios worldwide. Registrations commenced on June 17, 2021, with the inaugural tests scheduled for August 21, 2021.
In addition to these types, considering the examination mode, there were historically two types:
TOEFL Internet-Based Test (iBT)
TOEFL Paper-Based Test (pBT)
However, as of April 21, 2021, ETS officially discontinued the TOEFL pBT, making TOEFL iBT the sole examination method universally recognized. Stay informed about these variations to make an informed decision based on your preferences and the specific requirements of your academic pursuits.
